Dr. Opal Lee, known as The Grandmother of Juneteenth, was joyously celebrated, supported, and welcomed into her new home at the family’s historic 940 E. Annie property on June 14th. This historic homecoming event was made possible by the collective efforts and local partnership of HistoryMaker Homes, Texas Capital, and Trinity Habitat for Humanity.

Each of these organizations played a key role in this historic home build for Dr. Lee. HistoryMaker Homes built the home at no cost to Dr. Lee and, in collaboration with Trinity Habitat for Humanity, oversaw the construction of her home, ensuring a timely move-in date. Prior to the build, Dr. Lee visited the HistoryMaker Homes design center where she selected all of the flooring, fixtures and lighting for her home. Texas Capital provided a grant to Dr. Lee’s non-profit, Citizens Concerned with Human Dignity, which allowed her to furnish the home, creating a comfortable and welcoming space.

Trinity Habitat for Humanity, in addition to acquiring the 940 E. Annie property back in January 2021, organized the groundbreaking and wall-raising ceremonies, and a Day 1 volunteer day.

While this new home represents a full circle moment for Dr. Lee and her family, its foundation stands on the same hallowed ground where her family’s lives were deeply uprooted by racism and violence. On June 19th, 1939, when Opal was only 12 years old, after only four nights of living in their home, hundreds of white rioters gathered to harass, vandalize, and run their family out of the neighborhood.

Friday, June 14th, does not mark the end of the story, but a significant new chapter in Dr. Lee’s enduring legacy and a testament to her remarkable journey. Scheduled a few days before Juneteenth, attendees will witness the gathering of community leaders, activists, and supporters joining together to celebrate our local civil rights leader, The Grandmother of Juneteenth, Dr. Opal Lee.

“Dr. Lee’s contribution to our nation through her work for racial justice cannot be understated, and we are deeply honored to have built her new home that now proudly stands where great injustices once occurred,” said Nelson Mitchell, CEO of HistoryMaker Homes. “Each time Dr. Lee enters her home, we hope it not only offers her a welcoming space but also great sense of pride. Alongside our more than 50 partners and trades, our entire team at HistoryMaker was proud to work together on this project and now present Dr. Lee with the keys to her new home.”

Does your current home no longer fit your needs? Are you ready to get your home sold in a jiffy? Well, you’re in luck because we’ve got some...

Does your current home no longer fit your needs? Are you ready to get your home sold in a jiffy? Well, you’re in luck because we’ve got some super helpful tips for selling your home faster! Let’s dive in:

Clean Up Clutter: It may seem obvious, but this is a high-impact thing you can do to help your home sell. Remember, a clean home is a happy home – and it’s also more appealing to potential buyers who want to imagine themselves living there rather than seeing memorabilia of your life there. Pack away the sentimental items and family photos and use this opportunity to declutter your space by getting rid of things you don’t need anymore. You’ll be amazed at how much bigger and brighter your home will look!

Stage Strategically: When it comes to showing your home to potential buyers, staging is key. Arrange your furniture and decor in a way that highlights your home’s best features and makes it easy for buyers to envision themselves living there. A little staging can go a long way in making your home feel inviting and irresistible.

Spruce Up the Curb Appeal: They say you never get a second chance to make a first impression and that’s especially true when it comes to selling your home. So, why not give your curb appeal a little TLC? Plant some colorful flowers, mow the lawn, and maybe even slap on a fresh coat of paint. A little curb appeal can go a long way.

Fix What’s Broken: For people not looking to buy a fixer-upper, take care of any nagging repairs before putting your home on the market. Whether it’s a leaky faucet, a squeaky door, or a cracked window, tackling these small fixes now will save you headache later – and make your home much more attractive to buyers. It can also potentially increase the market price by more than it took to make the repairs.

Show Off Your Space: Now that your home is looking spick and span, it’s time to show it off! Work with a REALTOR® to take great photos that highlight your home’s best features and create a welcoming atmosphere for potential buyers. Think cozy lighting, fluffy pillows, and maybe even some fresh-baked cookies – anything to make prospective buyers feel right at home.

Price It Right: Last but not least, let’s talk about pricing. You want to make sure you’re asking for a fair price that reflects the value of your home, but you also don’t want to scare off potential buyers with sticker shock. Do some research, talk to a real estate agent, compare similar homes on the market, and come up with a price that’s just right.

Promote Online: In today’s digital age, the internet is your best friend when it comes to selling your home. Your REALTOR® can ensure your listing gets plenty of exposure by posting it on popular real estate websites and social media platforms. The more people see your listing, the more potential buyers you’ll attract!

With these extra tips in your toolkit, you’ll be well on your way to selling your current home faster than you ever thought possible. Roll up your sleeves, get to work, and before you know it, you’ll be saying goodbye to your old home and hello to your new adventure! And, HistoryMaker Homes is here to help you with any questions on how to sell your house faster and the transition into your new home.

HistoryMaker Homes, Texas’ oldest homebuilder with a 70-plus-year legacy of family-owned expertise in the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), Houston, and San Antonio markets, announced today that company president Lane Wright will retire at the end of 2023. Wright spent the last 10 years of his more than 36-year real estate career with HistoryMaker Homes, serving as the company’s chief operations officer for four years before becoming president in 2017. Under his leadership, the company enjoyed some of its greatest successes to date, experiencing significant growth and becoming one of the most recognized homebuilders in the state of Texas. Zac Thompson, president of HistoryMaker Homes’ build-for-rent sister company, ONM Living, will take the helm as president of HistoryMaker Homes beginning in 2024.

“I’m grateful to Lane for his unparalleled commitment and continued dedication to our organization and its vision over the last 10 years and wish him all the best in this next chapter of his life,” said Nelson Mitchell, CEO of HistoryMaker Homes. ” Lane created a lasting impact on our team, both in his leadership with his colleagues and with the success of our company. Under his expert guidance, HistoryMaker Homes expanded its footprint to serve more homebuyers, positioning our team for sustained, long-term growth. I feel confident that as Zac takes the reins, he and our entire team will continue the momentum established by Lane well into the future.”

Prior to Wright’s appointment in 2017 as the company’s first president outside the Mitchell family, HistoryMaker Homes closed approximately 800 homes annually and operated primarily in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Under his leadership, HistoryMaker Homes expanded to include nearly 40 communities across Texas’ largest markets in Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston and, in 2023, San Antonio. HistoryMaker Homes closed more than 1,250 homes in 2022.

“It has been both an honor and a privilege to work alongside Nelson and our entire team to continue to build on the legacy established with HistoryMaker Homes,” said Wright. “As I reflect back on my 36 years in the industry, I can confidently say that my work with HistoryMaker has been the capstone of my career. I know that the future holds great things for HistoryMaker Homes as it continues its work providing for homebuyers throughout Texas.”

In his new role, Thompson will draw on nearly five years of experience as president of ONM Living. During his tenure, he was responsible for the strategic direction and operational execution of the company, growing ONM Living from 200 units in 2020 to a projected 1,400 in 2024.

Thompson possesses more than 15 years of experience within public homebuilding, and throughout his career has held management and executive roles in finance, land operations, and homebuilding operations, which he will use to lead HistoryMaker Homes operations and strategy into the future.

“I’m thankful for the leadership Lane and Nelson demonstrated throughout my career at ONM Living and for their confidence in me to add value to the HistoryMaker Home team and its customers,” said Thompson. “I’m excited to work closely alongside Nelson and our team to build on the company’s recent expansion into the San Antonio market and carry out HistoryMaker Homes’ vision in Texas’ major markets well into the future.”

Thompson’s move from ONM Living to HistoryMaker Homes will take effect on January 1, 2024. Over the next six months, Wright will pass along his responsibilities to Thompson to ensure a seamless transition.

Out of all of the homes, neighborhoods, towns, counties, and states in the US, it can be a bit overwhelming to narrow down the exact place for you and your family to plant roots. Each has its own unique set of pros and cons depending on your personal preferences and needs. Before settling down in the location that’s right for you, there are sure to be a ton of questions running through your mind.

If you’ve at least narrowed it down to Dallas or Fort Worth, TX, you’re more than halfway to a great decision. Skip the difficulties of endless research. Allow us at HistoryMaker Homes to assist you in answering some of the questions you may have when relocating to Dallas/Fort Worth.

9 Reasons to Move to Dallas/Fort Worth

1. Low Local Taxes

Compared to other states, Texas overall is a relatively tax-friendly state. There is no income tax and no personal property tax, unless used for business purposes. The main taxes include state and local sales taxes and property taxes. The state sales tax is 6.25%, with the local sales tax of Dallas and Fort Worth at 0.75% and 2%, respectively. For real estate taxes, county appraisal districts annually review the current market value of all residential properties to determine tax payments. Luckily, local citizens can petition against increased taxes, and Texas has many property tax exemptions available.

2. Good School Districts

If you have a growing family and are curious about the school districts in Texas, and more specifically Dallas/Fort Worth, you’re in luck. There are several highly rated school districts here with ratings from A- to A+. Within the top rated districts, you’ll also find many great schools for your children to attend. For more information, speak to our Online Sales Counselors to find out which of our communities are close to these great schools and their districts.

3. Popular Government Type

Both Dallas and Fort Worth currently have a council-manager form of government. It is the most common form in the US today. This type of government combines the political leadership of elected officials with the managerial experience of an appointed city manager. It creates a well-balanced system that allows the governing body to come together to make policies that are beneficial to the community versus based on one individual.

4. Thriving Job Market

A key thing to look for when moving to a new state is the job market. Finding a good job means being able to provide for yourself and your family without worry. In the Dallas/Fort Worth area, the job market is thriving, especially with the many startup companies all over. Dallas’s major industries are technology, financial services, and defense. Fort Worth’s major industries are oil and gas, manufacturing, and aviation and aerospace. Even if you’re not interested in these types of industries, the unemployment rate is below the national average, so there are plenty of jobs for everyone.

5. Wonderful Weather

Though it may be less of a concern for some, weather is a pretty big deal when moving across state lines. If you’re used to hot weather, the transition to Dallas/Fort Worth will be very easy. The summers are hot and humid, with the highest temperatures in the month of August (an average high of 95 degrees Fahrenheit). In the winters, you’ll still get a nice break from the heat but won’t have to suffer below freezing temperatures. January is the coldest month of the year, with the average low temperature reaching 38 degrees Fahrenheit.

6. Safe Place to Live

Even if trained in martial arts or any other type of self-defense, it doesn’t lessen the concern most have about safety ratings. Especially in a brand-new environment where you’re not familiar with the area. Thankfully, there are a ton of safe places to live throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth areas. Located within areas with lower than national average crime rates, you can find a safe place to call home in our communities. Contact our Online Sales Counselors for more information.

7. Eco-Friendly Programs

Both Dallas and Fort Worth have made it a top priority to provide resources and programs for the sustainability of their communities. The Office of Environmental Quality in Dallas and the Sustainability Task Force in Fort Worth are doing a great job protecting the environment for current and future residents. In Dallas, the Sanitation Services Department reduced hydraulic spills by 70% within 2 years. This helped to increase surface water quality for wildlife and human consumption. In Fort Worth, their Save Fort Worth Water program educates and implements plans to conserve water. They set rules for residential and commercial customers on when and how to set their sprinkler systems as well as water conservation classes, workshops, and events to educate on more ways to save water.

8. Sports & Entertainment Venue

The Dallas/Fort Worth area has a massive selection of sports and entertainment venues. The American Airlines Center and AT&T Stadium are among the top go-to sports and entertainment arenas in the area. You can catch games from nationally recognized teams like the Dallas Mavericks, the Dallas Stars, and the Dallas Cowboys. For live music, you have to check out the House of Blues, the Toyota Music Factory, the Granada Theater, and the Kessler Theater. Other than music and sports, there are plenty of other kinds of exciting attractions to entertain visitors and residents alike. Check out the Fort Worth Zoo, Sundance Square, and the Dallas Museum of Art for a well-balanced mix of good times year round.

9. Transportation Options

With day-to-day responsibilities and all the amazing things to do in Dallas/Fort Worth, it’s essential to have a way to get around. The modes of transportation are endless in both areas, with the option to travel by car, bus, train, trolley, or plane (depending on where you’re going and how fast you want to get there). Dallas offers the DART, or Dallas Area Rapid Transit, which includes a series of DART Light Rail, Trinity Railway Express commuter rail, bus routes, and paratransit services that take passengers throughout Dallas and 12 surrounding cities. The city buses of Fort Worth run every 20 minutes and travel throughout three major districts. You can also travel by trolley on Saturdays or take the Trinity Railway Express commuter train to the DFW International Airport for a further destination.

Why are people moving to Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas? We hope with this list, we’ve uncovered the answer to this question and made the decision to move here that much simpler. Dallas/Fort Worth is a great place to live. It has great weather, it’s safe, it has multiple attractions, and more.

HistoryMaker CEO, Nelson Mitchell, is the recipient of the 2022 Hearthstone BUILDER Humanitarian Award. Since its inception in 1999, the award has donated more than $7 million to numerous charities, making it the homebuilding industry’s single largest charitable program.

This year, HistoryMaker is honored to add to that grand total and match Hearthstone’s $150,000 award for a combined $300,000. Two organizations, Homes for HOPE and The Miracle League, will split HistoryMaker’s donation – but this isn’t the first time the HistoryMaker family of companies have come together to make a difference.

BUILDING LOCALLY TO END POVERTY GLOBALLY

Homes for HOPE brings HistoryMaker and trade partners together with the goal of building and selling a home at little to no charge to maximize profits on the sale. The proceeds are used to help those living in some of the most impoverished areas around the world become more self-sufficient by providing access to micro loans, savings services, training, mentoring, and spiritual support. Homes for HOPE and HistoryMaker worked together in 2014, 2019, and look forward to continuing to support their mission.

BASEBALL IS FOR ALL

The Miracle League believes that every member of the community should be able to enjoy America’s national pastime, regardless of differences in mental and physical ability. HistoryMaker’s belief in their mission led to the sponsored construction of a handicap-accessible pavilion adjacent to Miracle League Field in Arlington as well as regular charity golf tournaments.

CULTURE OF GIVE BACK

Since the early days of building homes for soldiers returning from World War II, the Mitchell family has spent years weaving a servant’s heart into the fabric of the company that has lasted through decades of growth and change.

HistoryMaker’s forefathers built a tradition of charity that inspires the generations after to foster this culture of giving back. Having spent over 17 years with the company, Director of Construction Casey Jones has witnessed exactly this: “To be able to work with likeminded people who have a heart to serve and want to do the right thing because it’s the right thing to do – it’s a culture I haven’t been a part of anywhere else.”

Part of the legacy that’s been handed down started with Nelson Mitchell’s father and 3rd-generation CEO Bryan Mitchell, Sr. In 2021, Texas A&M University’s Department of Construction Science inducted him into the Constructor Hall of Fame for his years of service to the program’s students and faculty through endowments, scholarships, curriculum development, and internships that continue today with HistoryMaker’s newest generation.

Thanks to four-generations of family-focused, Christ-centered values, HistoryMaker sees a unique passion for philanthropy cultivated by their own employees, as evidenced by the Joy of Giving program. Every year, each community’s sales and construction teams receive an allotted amount to gift to a charity or organization of their choice. The program gives employees true ownership over give back initiatives that directly impact the communities they build in, hoping to snowball efforts and inspire other community members to do the same.

“The give back culture at HistoryMaker has introduced the concept of giving to team members who may not have had that opportunity in the past.” Director of Culture Cindy Culpepper speaks to the Joy of Giving’s butterfly effect, “We have seen how that has grown, blossomed, and how so many of our team members have built relationships in the communities they serve.”

In 2021 alone, through the Joy of Giving program, HistoryMaker impacted organizations and initiatives like I Can Still Shine, Toys for Tots, Cloud 9 Charities, Say Never Network, Youth With a Mission, Navy Marine Corps Relief Society, and Northwest Assistance Ministries. These charities are in addition to various chambers of commerce, animal shelters, school districts, police, and fire departments in cities like Royse City, Van Alstyne, Celina, Terrell, Cleburne, Denton, and Katy.

For Nelson, in an industry that’s been at the forefront of an ever-changing economic and social landscape, there’s never been a more important time to keep this unique piece of HistoryMaker’s culture thriving.

“I don’t think at the end of our life people are going to worry about how much money we made, how many possessions we accumulated,” He notes, “but really measure how many people did we help and what impact did we have on the world around us.”

How to Prepare Your Home for a Hard Freeze

Winters in Texas are generally mild, but in certain parts of the state, cold weather can hit hard and fast. In the event of a hard freeze (when temperatures drop to 30 degrees or below for at least a few hours), you can reduce the chance of damage to your home by taking a few quick precautions:

Keep your garage door closed, especially if the water supply lines are located there.

Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses, and wrap exterior hose bibs in insulating material.

Turn off the sprinkler system, and drain any water from the water supply lines. Your homeowner manual should have instructions on how to safely do this.

Leave the heat on in the house to help protect interior pipes. On walls that contain pipes that lead outside (like under the kitchen or bathroom sinks), open cabinet doors to allow heat from the house to warm those pipes. Keep the heat at a constant temperature day and night. This will prevent your system from having to work too hard (or even failing) as it tries to rewarm your house during a hard freeze.

Leave cold water dripping from faucets. The water stream should be about the size of a pencil. (Note: a hard freeze is NOT the time to try and conserve energy or water to lower your utility bills. The cost of major repair work will always be higher than spending a few extra dollars to keep your plumbing operational.)
For tankless and tanked water heaters: occasionally run hot water during a hard freeze.
If electricity or water to the home is out for tankless heaters: immediately take steps to protect the tankless water heater by following internet instructions/instruction manual for your type of water heater.

If you are leaving your home for an extended period during the winter, it’s a best practice to shut off the main water line to the house, just in case a freeze happens while you are away. Also, leave the heat in your house on, set to a temperature no lower than 55 degrees.

What To Do If Your Pipes Freeze…

If you turn on your faucet and notice that only a trickle of water comes out, chances are your pipes have frozen. Leave the faucet running and inspect the entire length of the pipe. If you come across a frozen section, take these steps to treat it as soon as possible:

Apply heat to the section of the pipe that’s frozen. You can wrap an electric heating pad around the pipe with the dial turned to high, use an electric hairdryer, a portable space heater (do not leave this running unattended or use near flammable areas), or you can soak a towel in hot water and wrap it around the pipe, rewetting it frequently. (Note: DO NOT USE a blowtorch, kerosene or propane heater, charcoal stove, or any other open flame device. This could damage your pipes or even start a fire.)

Keep applying heat until the faucet is completely open.

Check other faucets in the home to see if water is running. If not, treat that pipe in the same way.

If you cannot locate the frozen section, or if it is inaccessible, call a licensed plumber.

What To Do If Your Pipes Break

Turn off the main water supply and call a licensed plumber immediately.

Document any damage so you can properly submit an insurance claim, as your homeowner’s insurance may help cover repair costs.

When the temperatures dip, don’t take any chances with frozen pipes! These few, easy steps will go a long way to making sure you stay comfortable and safe in your home all winter long, no matter the weather.

Since the founding of our company, giving back to the communities where we build has been a core value. We are invested in not only providing high quality homes, but lending a helping hand wherever we can.

Each year, teams in our new home communities throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston areas select a non-profit organization, school, or ministry that makes a big impact locally. Each team is given $2,500 to donate as they see fit. Here are a few examples of how our teams and communities chose to give back in 2021!

Motivating Students

The Cloverleaf Crossing Townhomes team in Mesquite, TX chose to give back to the Mesquite ISD Education Foundation. This non-profit is dedicated to enriching and enhancing the education of Mesquite’s 40,000 students, providing funds for projects and programs outside the regular school district’s budget. In 2021, Cloverleaf Crossing donated $2,500, which the organization used to purchase bikes for 20 exemplary students at Tosch Elementary School. You can watch this news segment all about it!

Contributing to Women’s Health

Bozeman Farms Estates in Wylie, TX invested their resources in Youth With a Mission Wylie, a local chapter of an international organization that is dedicated to the mobilization of young people to spread the gospel. The team’s $2,500 donation was used to purchase a computer and tablet for client intake, charting and other administrative functions of the local pregnancy resource center.

Preventing Pet Overpopulation

Heartland in Heartland, TX was inspired to help the Say Never Network, which works to eliminate the overpopulation of pets in underprivileged communities, and works with city shelters to spay and neuter those pets. The $2,500 went to grants and donations that helped to reduce the cost of spay/neuter services for those who cannot afford it.

Reuniting Pets and Families

The team at Waterscape provided a donation to the Royse City Animal Shelter, which is dedicated to reuniting lost pets with families and rehoming unclaimed pets. One thousand dollars went to sponsor animal adoption fees and provide supplies to pets at the shelter. Waterscape also donated $1,500 to the Royse City Chamber of Commerce, which runs a program to meet the basic needs of food, clothing, and school supplies for children within Royse ISD.

Filling Bellies

Klein Grove in Katy, TX provided support to Northwest Assistance Ministries, which strives to meet basic human needs of local residents through their Neighbors Helping Neighbors program. Some of their initiatives include a food pantry, housing services, emergency basic needs, pediatric health care, Meals on Wheels, and job training. Klein Grove’s donation of $2,500 was used to fill the food pantry.

Honoring Those Who Serve

Chapin Village in Fort Worth,TX used their resources to help the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society provide financial, educational, and other assistance to members of the Naval Services of the U.S., eligible family members, and survivors when in need. The $2,500 went toward financial assistance and education.

Creating Safer Schools

The Katy Lakes team in Katy, TX donated $2,500 to Katy ISD to help start the Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) program at Peter McElwain Elementary. This program focuses on the prevention of violence in schools by using the positive influence of fathers and father figures.
