Dr. Opal Lee, known as The Grandmother of Juneteenth, was joyously celebrated, supported, and welcomed into her new home at the family’s historic 940 E. Annie property on June 14th. This historic homecoming event was made possible by the collective efforts and local partnership of HistoryMaker Homes, Texas Capital, and Trinity Habitat for Humanity.

Each of these organizations played a key role in this historic home build for Dr. Lee. HistoryMaker Homes built the home at no cost to Dr. Lee and, in collaboration with Trinity Habitat for Humanity, oversaw the construction of her home, ensuring a timely move-in date. Prior to the build, Dr. Lee visited the HistoryMaker Homes design center where she selected all of the flooring, fixtures and lighting for her home. Texas Capital provided a grant to Dr. Lee’s non-profit, Citizens Concerned with Human Dignity, which allowed her to furnish the home, creating a comfortable and welcoming space.

Trinity Habitat for Humanity, in addition to acquiring the 940 E. Annie property back in January 2021, organized the groundbreaking and wall-raising ceremonies, and a Day 1 volunteer day.

While this new home represents a full circle moment for Dr. Lee and her family, its foundation stands on the same hallowed ground where her family’s lives were deeply uprooted by racism and violence. On June 19th, 1939, when Opal was only 12 years old, after only four nights of living in their home, hundreds of white rioters gathered to harass, vandalize, and run their family out of the neighborhood.

Friday, June 14th, does not mark the end of the story, but a significant new chapter in Dr. Lee’s enduring legacy and a testament to her remarkable journey. Scheduled a few days before Juneteenth, attendees will witness the gathering of community leaders, activists, and supporters joining together to celebrate our local civil rights leader, The Grandmother of Juneteenth, Dr. Opal Lee.

“Dr. Lee’s contribution to our nation through her work for racial justice cannot be understated, and we are deeply honored to have built her new home that now proudly stands where great injustices once occurred,” said Nelson Mitchell, CEO of HistoryMaker Homes. “Each time Dr. Lee enters her home, we hope it not only offers her a welcoming space but also great sense of pride. Alongside our more than 50 partners and trades, our entire team at HistoryMaker was proud to work together on this project and now present Dr. Lee with the keys to her new home.”

At HistoryMaker Homes, we pride ourselves on the longevity and stability of our company. We’ve been a family-run business for over 70 years, but there’s no way we could have survived without the dedicated and passionate people who work here.

This year, we are so fortunate and happy to celebrate the careers of three people who help make our company what it is. Andy, our Area Construction Manager, Dona, our Senior Accountant, and Johnny, our Field Manager, have been with HistoryMaker Homes for 25 years! It is a special milestone, and we’re so honored that they’ve chosen to be part of our family for so long.

HistoryMaker Homes started as a father-son operation in 1949, and through their commitment to building homes for Texas families, they grew the company year-after-year, receiving praises and accolades along the way for their high level of customer service and innovative approaches to building.

That work ethic and dedication has been passed down through the years, and every team member is encouraged to be just as involved in the company as the original father-son team.

Since Andy, Dona, and Johnny joined the HistoryMaker family in 1996, the company has seen tremendous growth. In 2000, during Nelson Mitchell’s time as president, the first showroom was developed. This 10,000-square-foot space allowed customers to browse through every option and make their selections for flooring, appliances, paint colors, fixtures, and more. It was a game changer in the Dallas home building market, and through this and other initiatives, sales quadrupled in one year from 300 to 1,200.

In 2016, HistoryMaker Homes opened its first Houston model home in Spring, TX, marking its first expansion into a new market. Today, the company builds throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston metro areas. We couldn’t have done it without Andy, Dona, and Johnny, and all of our wonderful team members. Congratulations on a terrific 25 years, and thank you!

HistoryMaker Homes has always prioritized giving back to the communities and neighborhoods where we build homes. Whether we offer time, money, or resources, initiatives large and small have become core to our company culture as we seek to strengthen the communities we’re building in and the people’s lives we impact.

That’s why we’re so excited to have contributed a cornerstone brick to The Town of Providence Village’s Hero Park. This park will include a brick monument dedicated to heroes from all walks of life, including first responders, active military service members, veterans, and unsung heroes. This is Providence Village’s first town park, and will be a place for residents to gather, reflect, and relax together under the trees. The first set of bricks were installed on June 18, 2021.

It started as a master planned community and has grown into a thriving community of 8,000 people with new, affordable housing options, access to two different school districts, and a host nearby amenities for the entire family.

HistoryMaker Homes is proud to be building two brand new communities within this quaint Denton County town. Liberty at Providence offers 3-6 bedroom homes with up to 3 baths, 2-car garages, and up to 3,116 square feet. The Landing at Providence has just a few opportunities remaining for new homes with up to 8 bedrooms, up to 5 baths, up to 3-car garages, and up to 3,854 square feet.

Texas A&M University’s Department of Construction Science has inducted Dr. Bryan N. Mitchell, Sr., into its Constructor Hall of Fame, adding HistoryMaker Homes’ Chairman Emeritus to a distinguished list of real estate innovators.

Dr. Mitchell followed his grandfather and father into the family business in 1986 following a veterinary career spanning 15 years and three Tarrant County veterinary clinics. Under his leadership, HistoryMaker grew into a nationally recognized company and solidified its position as one of the most prodigious land developers and homebuilders in the Dallas-Fort Worth region.

“My father built thousands of affordable homes for first-time homebuyers across North Texas,” said Nelson Mitchell, who transitioned to HistoryMaker President in 2000. “He took a company carefully built by his father and grandfather to the next level, shaping the residential landscape of Dallas-Fort Worth.”

Among Dr. Mitchell’s numerous industry awards are the Award for Construction Excellence (ACE) and the National Housing Quality Award (NHQ) from the National Association of Homebuilders.

A 1970 graduate of Texas A&M University, Dr. Mitchell has long been a supporter of the school’s construction science and real estate programs, gifting $2.3 million in 2006 to fund a program that bridged the Department of Construction Science and the Mays School of Business’ real estate program.

The largest financial contribution received by the department at the time, this gift endowed five faculty positions, funded 10 student scholarships and supported the construction of an interdisciplinary studio and curriculum focusing on residential construction and design.

“My father’s passion has always been to build communities and homes for families,” Nelson said. “His generosity to Texas A&M has helped teach, train and develop our current and future industry leaders. More families will own high quality, energy efficient, affordable homes because of his and my mother’s generosity and vision. The TAMU Department of Construction Science has been a great partner with HistoryMaker Homes.”

Today, HistoryMaker Homes builds more than 1,000 homes annually across 36 Texas new home communities. It is ranked No. 57 on Builder magazine’s list of the top homebuilders in the nation.

For many of us, shelter is a given. But what about the rest? As part of the Greater Houston Builders Association (GHBA) Benefit Homes Project, HistoryMaker Homes just completed a very special project in the Houston area community of Sierra Vista. The sale of this one home will benefit veterans and the homeless through two local charities: HomeAid Houston and Operation Finally Home.

40-Years, $12 Million Raised

In its 40-year existence, the Benefit Homes Project has raised $12 million, thanks to the generosity of the Houston area’s building community. Homebuilders, developers, suppliers, tradespeople, and other GHBA members donate their time, labor, and materials for the construction of two to three homes per year. When each new home is sold, the proceeds benefit HomeAid Houston and Operation Finally Home. Last year alone, the two Benefit homes raised $494,000.

HomeAid Houston is a non-profit organization that supports homeless care providers by building, repairing, or expanding shelters. Operation Finally Home was established in 2005, with a heartfelt mission: Provide custom-built and mortgage-free homes to America’s military heroes and the widows of fallen soldiers.

The HistoryMaker Homes team and partners welcomed the opportunity to support HomeAid Houston and Operation Finally Homes.

HistoryMaker Gives Back

“We value the work the two charities provide our community. It is an honor to work with the Land Tejas team and our generous vendors, trades and suppliers,” said HistoryMaker Houston division president, Mickey Pizzitola. Land Tejas donated the homesite for the Sierra Vista home, their 17th lot donation for Benefit Homes.

We’d like to thank our partners who contributed to the GHBA Benefit Home: All Points Group, DPIS Builder Services, Excell Foundations, Universal Forest Products, Windstorm Group, Mohawk, TWI, Country Wide Roofing, Deep Blue Comfort, Rock Materials, Builders Choice Inc., Royal Bath/Counter Source Flooring Services, Advantage Gutters, Factory Builder Stores, Sherwin Williams Paint, Builders First Source, Perfection Supply, and Jacobs Overhead Door.

More Home. Smart Choice.

As with every home we build, this one reflects our “More Home. Smart Choice” mission—to provide the foundation for your most meaningful memories. We maximize functional space and include smart features that live the way you do. With intelligent construction methods, energy efficiency, and integrated home technology, building a HistoryMaker home is simply a smart choice.

The Benefit home for sale in Sierra Vista is located at 2626 Matterhorn Mist Drive in Iowa Colony, TX. The Alder floor plan is a 3,176-square-foot, 2-story home with 5 bedrooms—each with a walk-in closet—4 baths, and a 3-car garage. This plan features a first-floor master bedroom suite and a game room upstairs. The open floor plan combines a spacious, center island kitchen that blends seamlessly with the dining area and family room, perfect for entertaining.

Contact HistoryMaker Homes to schedule your private tour of the Benefit home at Sierra Vista. Imagine knowing that by starting your new life here you are helping other people realize their own dream of having a home to call their own.

February 17, 2017 (Grapevine, Texas) – Tarrant County’s HISTORYMAKER Homes is excited to announce the move to its new company headquarters in Grapevine, Texas. The new building is 28,000-square-feet of combined office and showroom space (increased from 11,500-square-feet), and houses 130 DFW-area employees spanning the company’s three brands, HISTORYMAKER Homes, Rendition Homes, and Rendition LUXURY Homes.

The company’s continued growth spurred the move. In 2016, HISTORYMAKER and its sister brands completed more than 800 starts. The company’s revenue more than doubled from 2014, at $90 million, to 2016, at $200 million. It is ranked #64 on the 2016 national Builder 100 list.

The company’s growth can be attributed to a business model that has focused over the past ten years on new price points, products, geographies and markets. In the last decade, its reach has expanded from being primarily focused in Tarrant County to blanketing the Metroplex from Aledo to the west and Terrell to the east, north to Sherman and south to Waxahachie. The company also began building in Houston in 2016, with the goal of growing its Houston division over the next several years to the size of its Dallas operations. The three brands vary in starting prices from approximately $150,000 to more than $3 million.

“In addition to needing more physical space for more employees, it was important to become more centrally located as we continue to expand throughout DFW,” said Nelson Mitchell, CEO. “Once we began to expand in Houston it made sense to be located near DFW airport to bring even more efficiency. Grapevine is also a central location for our customers as we bring them to our new 5,000-square-foot showroom. It’s also ideal as we recruit top talent as we continue to grow.”

“We are excited that HISTORYMAKER Homes has chosen Grapevine as the location for its new headquarters,” said RaDonna Hessel, Grapevine Chamber of Commerce CEO. “Our town has so much to offer HISTORYMAKER employees including its central location and access to DFW International Airport, as well as proximity to our historic Main Street. We are so happy they are a part of our community.”

The company is a fourth-generation family-owned business. Nelson Mitchell is the current president and CEO. His great grandfather, Olen N. Mitchell, Sr. started the company with his son, Olen, Jr., in 1949. He began the company with three employees out of the garage of his home, signing contracts on the hood of his car.
